WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE THESE THINGS AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Good questions, and if you really are interested in how they work from a technical point of view, email us at info@rtboxes.com or call 1-800-451-9779 ext 200 and we will give you enough reading material, charts and graphs to keep you busy for weeks!

In a nut shell, sound waves can interfere, disrupt and, even, cancel other sound waves.  This is especially true in an enclosed area, such as, a square boxy rooms you typically find in all homes and offices.  Sound pressure builds, especially in the upper corners of the room producing a new sound wave, called a standing sound wave, which, in turn distorts and muddies sounds in all frequencies.   Foam and/or fiber insulation panel treatments don't cut it, they just basically eliminate echos.  They don't do much of anything in the lower frequency areas or reduce the sound pressures that cause this acoustic problem.  On top of that, most are extremely large and unsightly, PLUS they are way more expensive!

!

OK, SO YOU'VE SPENT SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS ON HIGH-TECH AUDIO/VIDEO EQUIPMENT, BUT, PROBABLY, NOT A DIME ON A VERY IMPORTANT "COMPONENT".....THE ACOUSTICS OF THE LISTENING OR HOME THEATER ROOM!!

So, what to do?  (A) Hire an acoustical engineer and a general contractor.  For $20,000 or $30,000, you can do a remodel job that will acoustically balance the room and improve the sound quality substantially.  OR, (B) "Treat" the room to compensate for it's acoustical deficiencies.  This option is much cheaper, much quicker and, certainly, less costly!  Cheap and quick is good, but ONLY if the treatment actually improves the sound quality.

There's a lot of snake oil remedies out there that claim to handle this problem.  They, almost all, use some type of deadening material made from some sort of foam, fiber glass, wood fiber or combination.  These absorb sound waves or deaden the sound, which is good for echos, but, hey, you could just buy an upholstered sofa and chair to help with echos.  You'd probably save money and have something comfortable to sit in, to boot!

Pictured is an RDP in it's ideal mounting position, in the corner, next to the ceiling.  Of course, you need four(2 pairs), one for each corner of the room.  At only 5 lbs, measuring 11"x 16" and less than 2" thick, they are easy and quick to hang, just like a small picture.

!

For maximum performance, two mounted in each room corner does the trick and the cost of 4 pair is Still way under $1,000 at only $719.80.  One part I really like is that it was easy to sell moma on the idea because they look good, and with 8 colors of grill cloth to choose from, you can keep her happy with a color that will blend right into the decor.  I've got a set of bass traps, I spent a whole lot more money on than my RDP's, that are banished to the garage, simply because she wouldn't have the things in the house!

So why are the RDP's mounted in the upper room corners and how does that help your room acoustics?  The lower frequencies, 200 htz and below,  create high pressure zones in the upper corners of a room.  Simply put, they relieve that pressure, and it's that low frequency sound wave pressure that permit the standing sound waves to cause interference and trouble with the entire sound spectrum.

Your bass will be "tighter" and much cleaner (No boomy or weak spots).  The big surprise is the clarity and crispness of the midrange and higher frequencies. Instrumentals and vocal reproduction is much brighter more detailed. Plain dialog becomes more understandable.
