BOSE and it's founder, Amar Bose, are THE authorities in sound reproduction.  They own a lot of patents in that field.  The majority of these patents don't involve the speaker, but the speaker environment ~or~ the speaker enclosure.  In short, Bose became the premier speaker system in the world, not with a high budget speaker, but an enclosure that lets the speaker perform.(Have you ever looked at the Bose speaker itself?  It ain't much!)  

The design of a speaker hasn't changed much for a hundred years.  It's come to be understood by the true car stereo audiofiles that the speaker's environment is the most critical component to the desired sound reproduction in the over all sound system.
